What Is an M3U Playlist and Xtream Codes?

These two terms come up in every IPTV setup guide — here's what they actually mean, and which one you'll be using when you connect your player app.

What is an M3U playlist?

An M3U file is a plain text playlist that lists the web addresses (URLs) of every channel or stream in your subscription, one after another, so a player app can read the file and build your channel list automatically. It's an old, simple format — originally used for audio playlists — that IPTV adopted because it's lightweight and universally supported.

How do you use an M3U link?

You paste the M3U URL you're given into your player app's "add playlist" field, and the app downloads the file and populates your channels, categories and often a program guide in one step. You don't need to open or edit the file yourself — it's meant to be handled entirely by the app.

What is Xtream Codes?

Xtream Codes refers to a server-side panel format that many IPTV providers use to manage accounts and deliver content. Instead of a single static M3U link, Xtream Codes logins use three separate pieces of information — a server/portal URL, a username, and a password — and the player app fetches your channel list live from the server each time you open it.

M3U vs Xtream Codes — what's the practical difference?

  • M3U is a static link — if your channel list changes, you may need an updated link
  • Xtream Codes logs in live each time, so channel updates apply automatically without a new link
  • Most modern player apps accept either format, so you're not locked into one
  • Neither format is inherently "better" — they're just two ways of delivering the same channels

Which one will you use with your subscription?

When you sign up, you'll receive login details in one or both formats — check your welcome email for either an M3U URL or a server/username/password set, and enter whichever one your chosen player app asks for. Our setup guide shows exactly where these fields appear on each supported device, and if a fresh install won't load channels, our troubleshooting guide covers common connection issues too.
